Spa Facial Treatments with Clay Powders – Nature’s Answer to Botox
Firmer, Younger Looking Skin in 15 Minutes a Week
There are numerous, high-priced facial products on the market promising to take years off your appearance. Sometimes it’s true however that the simplest solutions, straight from nature, are often the best. Clay Powders, which are found naturally in the earth’s surface, can create the most effective and economical facial masques, with surprisingly age-defying results.
Clay powders have been used for skin care since the heydays of ancient Rome and Egypt over 2000 years ago. They are used now by many of the finest spas in the world. When mixed with water they become an instant mud that can be applied to the face as a beauty masque for healthy, firmer, younger-looking skin.
BENEFITS OF CLAY POWDER FOR FACIALS
TONES AND TIGHTENS
As the clay masque dries on your face and neck, you can feel the skin tighten. By this simple process, your skin is being actively cleansed and toned by the drying clay. After the facial, wrinkles will lessen in appearance and your skin will feel firmer and more supple. With regular use, the effects can be remarkable.
EXFOLIATES GENTLY
The fine powders of facial clays cause a mild exfoliation effect which removes dead cells, encourages new cell growth, and leaves skin looking smooth, radiant and young. The clays also help stimulate circulation, which leads to naturally healthy, more self-regulating skin.
CLEANS AND REFINES PORES
Clays have what is described as a “drawing” effect. When you use a clay masque, it draws toxins and dirt from within your pores as the masque dries on your skin. Pores are deep cleansed and become more refined in appearance. Some clays are more powerful than others (see list of clays below).
INFUSES WITH MINERALS
The rich mineral content of clays, which varies based on where they are sourced, feeds and rejuvenates the skin. Our skin takes a beating from many environmental factors such as strong sun, wind, dry indoor air, and indoor and outdoor air pollutants;   a healthy infusion of minerals helps nourish and replace what our skin has lost due to daily wear and tear.
NO PRESERVATIVES
Since you are mixing your clay facial masque fresh with water each time you use it, your masque is one hundred percent natural, which is, of course, much healthier for your skin. Most facial products, which you purchase in stores, contain preservatives such as parabens to prevent mold from forming. Many studies attribute negative effects to their wide spread use in our skin care products, although the long term effects of synthetic preservatives are still unclear.

HOW TO GIVE YOURSELF A CLAY MASQUE FACIAL - SPA STYLE!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
·         2 tablespoons clay powder (see varieties listed below)
·         Small cup of warm water
·         Bowl and spoon for mixing
·         Facial brush (you can also use your hands to apply mud)
·         Small hand towel
·         Relaxing music
·         Scented candle
·         Book or magazine
GETTING READY
First, put on some relaxing music. Light a scented candle. You want to be fully relaxed to really enjoy the experience. These things are not necessary but they lend ambiance to your experience!
If your hair is long you might want to tie it back out of the way. Wash your face and neck with mild soap, rinse off, and then pat dry with a towel.
Next, place two tablespoons of your clay of choice in the bowl. Add two tablespoons warm water and mix briskly to make a smooth mud.
Clays vary naturally in how absorbent they are, so the thickness of your mud may also vary based on what clay you are using. It’s really easy to adjust. If this mud appears too thick to spread easily, add more water. If the mud appears too thin and watery to apply to your face, add more powder.
PLAYING WITH MUD
Now the fun part! Apply the mud to your face and neck, taking care to avoid the eye area. You can use a facial brush or simply use your fingertips. Apply in a consistent layer so it will dry evenly.
Once you’ve covered the face and neck in mud, you can sit and relax for a little while. Read a book or magazine. Close your eyes and meditate. Try a few yoga positions. Simply sit back and listen to some soothing music. It’s a time for your senses. You will feel your skin growing tighter beneath the masque.
THE GLOWING FINALE
After about 10 or 15 minutes your masque should be completely dry and tight on your face. Now you can wash it off with cool water, which should feel refreshing and rejuvenating. Splash your face with cool water until all the mud has washed off, then pat dry with a towel.
Your skin will feel clean, tight and rejuvenated. You may have a healthy pink glow to your cheeks.
Follow up with a light moisturizer. Repeat one to three times a week for healthy, youthful skin.

TYPES OF CLAY FOR FACIAL MASQUES
BENTONITE is a combination of volcanic ash and montmorillonite originally found in Fort Benton, Wyoming. It is highly absorbent and powerfully draws oils and toxins from the skin. Bentonite is best used on oily or combination skin and is not recommended for sensitive, dry or normal skin types. However, you may mix Bentonite with other clays to use it on more sensitive skin types.
BOHEMIAN BLACK ORGANIC FANGO is a dark kaolin clay harvested in Western Bohemia. It is rich not just in minerals but also in naturally occurring Fulvic and Humic Acids, which make it a potent agent to re-mineralize and detoxify the skin. The Black Organic Fango essentially feeds the skin to keep it healthy, while cleaning the pores, lifting impurities and removing excess oils. Bohemian Black Organic Fango is appropriate for all skin types.
COSO MOUNTAIN CLAY, also known as Green Clay, is the most commonly used therapeutic clay. It is comprised of California montmorillonite and is highly efficient at drawing oils and toxins from the skin. Rich in minerals and phyto-nutrients, it works to re-mineralize the skin and stimulate circulation. It is ideal for acne-prone or oily complexions and is not recommended for sensitive or dry skin.
DEAD SEA CLAY is found at the bottom of the Dead Sea itself and is rich in twenty-six minerals and trace elements. Enjoy all the healing benefits of the Dead Sea without a long journey! A Dead Sea Clay masque tightens pores, removes toxins and impurities and greatly improves circulation. Dead Sea Clay is suitable for all skin types.
KAOLIN CLAY, also know as China White or White Clay, is the mildest of all facial clays. It helps stimulate circulation while gently exfoliating and cleansing the skin. It is a pure, fine clay used sometimes alone as a face powder for fair skin. As a masque it is safe for all skin types, even dry.
RHASSOUL CLAY is a super fine clay from deep within the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and is rich in vital minerals such as Silica, Magnesium, Iron, Calcium, Potassium and Sodium. Rhassoul is appropriate for all skin types, but is particularly good for sensitive or mature skin since it cleans and exfoliates gently and also improves skin elasticity.
ROSE CLAY is essentially Pink Kaolin and has all the benefits of Kaolin with a unique rosey color derived from naturally occurring iron oxides in the clay. While stimulating the circulation, it cleans and exfoliates the skin gently. Rose Clay is excellent for use on all skin types.
SEA CLAY is harvested from land that was once ancient seabeds. This gives it the mineral-richness and drawing power of a land-derived clay with the added benefits of the sea – essentially the moisturizing ability and skin nourishment of seaweed. It draws oils while re-mineralizing and nourishing the skin. Sea Clay is an excellent choice for any skin type and is also a great clay for body wraps.

MIX IT UP
You can mix and match any of the above clays to make a unique facial masque. You can also add some seaweed powder to your mask for added moisturizing. More about seaweed in future posts.
